Villefranche Fisherman, 50 x 65cm or l9.5” x 25.5” Sometimes when you are painting on location -- pleinair--you get lucky and something pops up in front of you for a brief moment. That is what happened here when a fisherman walked across the platform below me while I was painting. He seemed like the perfect thing to add a bit of life to the canvas. Villefranche is a small fishing village just east of Nice, France, very near the Italian border. The architecture reflects that influence. This is one of my favorite places in France and we spent several days here so i could paint. This piece is done in a watercolor style with lovely loose lines and brush strokes. The colors of the buildings can only be gotten like this from life because a photo will never capture their nuances.
